Should Insurance be Mandatory for Gun Owners?

If it’s one thing that most gun owners agree upon, it’s this: the government shouldn’t interfere too much with their constitutional right to bear arms. Furthermore, the government should not be in the business of mandating insurance for gun owners. Suggested? Fine. Mandated? No thanks.

Gun OwnersLately, lawmakers in several states and regions are pushing bills that would force gun owners to buy liability insurance from casualty insurers. Mandatory insurance could become the norm in places like New York, New Hampshire, Hawaii and Los Angeles, California.

If passed, mandatory insurance for gun owners means hefty fines for those who don’t comply. Imagine having to pay a fine of up to $10,000 for not following their rules? Preposterous! Ridiculous!

Lawmakers would like for all people who wish to purchase guns to provide proof of liability insurance BEFORE purchasing their firearm, and then maintaining that insurance while owning their gun(s). You know what that means: more money for the insurance companies, less money for the gun owners, and too much regulation gone awry. In the end, the “little guy” gets fleeced for money. What happened to American freedom? When did having to carry insurance on owning a gun become the new norm?

Even if insurance was mandatory, it’s still not going to cover gun-related deaths due to suicides and homicides! And criminals aren’t going to worry about insuring their firearms, so, really what’s the point? Basically, it sounds fishy– a money grab on the part of the powers-that-be.

Carrying insurance on your firearms is your choice. It’s a good idea in case something goes wrong. But it shouldn’t be the absolute rule. It ends up especially hurting low-income people who have to spend more money than they can truly afford just to insure their gun(s).

Write or call your local lawmaker and express your frustration with them if they’re voting in support of mandatory insurance for gun owners in your state or region.
